Comcast offers $9.95 Internet Service to low income families in Michigan
Comcast has announced that they are bringing their Internet Essentials program to Michigan through a partnership with Focus: HOPE.
Internet Essentials is Comcast's effort to bring low cost broadband internet to low income families. It offers service for $9.95 a month plus tax as well as a guarantee for no price increase, no activation fee and no equipment rental fees. Users also get a voucher to purchase a low-cost computer for $149.99 plus tax.
In order to be eligible a customer must be located where Comcast offers Internet service. They also cannot have had a Comcast Internet service subscription within the last 90 days or an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment.
Subscribers must also have at least one child who receives a free school lunch under the NSLP.
How to qualify
To qualify for $9.95 a month Internet service and a low-cost computer, your household must meet all these criteria:
1. located where Comcast offers Internet service
2. Have at least one child receiving free school lunches through the National School Lunch Program
3. Have not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days
4. Not have an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment

Working Conditions:
Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds. Working in this environment requires wearing a company provided uniform and safety equipment to include but not limited to: eye safety glasses, hearing protectors and hard hats. The purpose is to study how certain factors, including money, the amount of drug available and the amount of work effort, affect cocaine choice. This is not a treatment study. Volunteers must be willing to live for at least 16 and up to 20 consecutive nights on a residential unit, during which time they will participate in experimental sessions that involve choices between different drug doses and money.
Candidates will be thoroughly medically and psychiatrically screened. Only volunteers who are in good health, 18 to 55 years old and not seeking treatment for drug abuse will be accepted.
Volunteers can earn up to $55 for screening and from $640 to $998 for completing the study.

General Motors
DETROIT - General Motors Co. will add 2,500 jobs at a Detroit-area factory, investing $69 million so the plant can make two new Chevrolet sedans.
The factory, which straddles the border between Detroit and the small enclave of Hamtramck, now makes the Chevrolet Volt and its European counterpart, the Opel Ampera. GM announced on Wednesday that it will upgrade the plant so that it can run around the clock making the new Malibu midsize car and a revamped Impala, a large sedan.
About 1,200 of the jobs will be new hires, since GM still has to recall about 1,300 laid-off workers in the U.S. But in Michigan, which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, the jobs are big news.
The company gave no time frame for hiring new people or recalling laid-off workers. It said new hires at the plant will get around $14 per hour, about half the pay rate of veteran United Auto Workers union members.
The jobs are part of a larger GM expansion to create or keep about 4,000 jobs by investing $2 billion in 17 factories in the U.S. GM has already announced more jobs at plants in Bowling Green, Ky.; Toledo, Ohio; and Flint and Bay City, Mich.
"Filling this plant with new work is very satisfying because GM is dedicated to helping rebuild this city," Mark Reuss, the company's North American president, said in a statement.
GM said last week it would shut the Detroit-Hamtramck plant for four weeks starting in June, reconfiguring it to boost Volt and Ampera production from 16,000 cars per year to 60,000 next year to meet strong demand. It will also allow GM to add equipment to build the 2013 Malibu at the plant starting next year. The car also will be built in Kansas City, Kansas.
In addition, GM said it will build a long-overdue new version of the Impala at the factory. GM released few details about the car, which is expected to go into production for the 2013 model year. The current version is far noisier and lacks technology and handling offered by competitors such as the Ford Taurus. Now built in Oshawa, Ontario, it's the ninth generation of the Impala and went on sale starting in the 2006 model year. Spokesman Chris Lee would not say if the Oshawa plant would also build the new Impala.
GM sold about 70,000 Impalas through April, an increase of nearly 30 percent over the first four months of last year. Last year many of the cars went to large fleet buyers such as rental car companies.
GM will stop producing two other big cars at the factory, the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne, later this year.

Cocaine-dependent volunteers are needed for a 3-week research study in Detroit, MI. The purpose is to study how certain factors, including money, the amount of drug available and the amount of work effort, affect cocaine choice. This is not a treatment study. Volunteers must be wiling to live for at least 16 and up to 20 consecutive nights on a residential unit, during which time they will participate in experimental sessions that involve choices between different drug doses and money.
Candidates will be thoroughly medically and psychiatrically screened. Only volunteers who are in good health, 18 to 55 years old, and not seeking treatment for drug abuse will be accepted.
Volunteers can earn up to $55 for screening and from $640 to $998 for completing the study.

Minimum wage to rise in seven states
WASHINGTON (News Core) - The minimum wage is ticking higher in seven states come New Year's Day, affecting about 647,000 workers, Market Watch reported Wednesday, citing the National Employment Law Project (NELP), a New York-based advocacy group.
The minimum wage is rising between nine and 12 cents in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont and Washington state.
The increases are automatic adjustments for inflation, according to NELP. Following the gains, 17 states and the District of Columbia will have minimum wages above the federal level of $7.25 per hour. Workers are entitled to the higher of either the state or federal minimum wage.
About 48 percent of those receiving the federal minimum wage are at least 25 years old, while about 52 percent are between 16 and 24, according to the U.S. Labor Department.
The federal minimum wage pays a full-time earner about $15,000 per year, according to NELP.
A small portion of U.S. workers who are paid an hourly rate receive less than the federal minimum wage.
There are exemptions to the federal law, and it’s not always illegal to pay less than the minimum.
The unemployment rate is 9.8 percent, and there are more than four potential job seekers for each opening.
